Short Overview of the Unit: 

University Hospital Coventry is an Enhanced B Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Unit.

We provide inpatient, outpatient and day case chemotherapy, as well as supportive care to children diagnosed with a malignancy and who live in Coventry or Warwickshire.

Patients who require admission to hospital are cared for on Ward 16.

 

Referral Information: 

Coventry and Warwickshire GPs refer and discuss all paediatric suspected cancer cases via Consultant Connect phone line and messaging service.

Birmingham Children’s hospital contact the lead clinicians to refer Warwickshire area patients newly  diagnosed with cancer who have presented to other local units (South Warwickshire or George Elliot Hospital)

Facilities for Patients and Families:

Ward 16 has 24 inpatient beds. Patients with an oncology diagnosis are always cared for on this ward in a side room (unless they need critical care monitoring). The ward has a playroom and an outside space available for patients to use.

Patients requiring day case chemotherapy or supportive treatment are looked after in our Paediatric Medical Day Unit.

We have a paediatric level 2 critical care unit on site.

One parent is able to stay overnight with their child and a bed is provided. All our side rooms have fridges, and an ensuite bathroom. There is a small kitchen facility also available on the ward, and there are various food outlets within the wider hospital site.

 

Support Services Available:

Psychologist in core MDT and will see patients and family after referral and initial assessment 

 

Visiting Information:

Parents are able to be with their child at all times. General visiting is from 2-8pm and we ask that no more than 2 adults are at the bedside at any one time.
