Short Overview of the Unit:
24/7 General children's ward caring for a wide range of specialities including medical, surgical, day case and providing paediatric oncology shared care. There is also a Paediatric Assessment Unit, open 0930-2200 7 days per week, located at the end of the ward and this is part of the Urgent Care Pathway.
Paediatric Oncology Shared Care with BCH Birmingham and QMC Nottingham. All children and young people who are known to BCH/QMC, have open access to Burton if we are their local hospital. Services provided: Admission and assessment/management of febrile neutropenia, administration of blood/blood products, or other infusions as appropriate, supportive care and medical reviews.
Referral Information:
Suspected paediatric cancer referrals can be urgently made by General Practitioners (GPs) for a same day or next morning review/admission via switchboard (01283 566 333) and speaking to either on call paediatric registrar (24/7) or service week consultant (9am-5pm)
All known paediatric oncology children and young people have open access and can self-refer for assessment by telephoning the ward/PAU.
Community Nurses, or tertiary centres can also refer for any known children or young people to come to us for assessment/supportive care.
Out of Hours Contact::
Via switchboard (01283 566 333) and ask to speak to on call paediatric registrar (24/7) Paediatric oncology patients who have open access and are already known to QHB services can ring Ward 1 directly on 01283593233.
Facilities for Patients and Families:
8-10 bedded inpatient unit, with additional capacity for day case activity. Cubicles with ensuite facilities available. Camp beds provided for 1 parent/carer to stay overnight.
Play team and access to playroom, sensory room and outdoor play area.
Support with parking charges - 1 pass per family for each overnight stay.
Meals provided for 1 parent if staying overnight. Access to tea/coffee making facilities 24/7. Restaurant open 0800-1800. Coffee shop open 0800-1700. WH Smiths shop open 0800-1900.
Support Services Available:
Acute inpatient psychiatric support available in the event of a crisis.
Access to inpatient Dietetics, Physiotherapy, Speech and Language Therapy.
Hospital Play Specialist support.
Visiting Information:
24/7 open visiting for parents/carers. 2 visitors to a bedspace. Visiting hours for wider family 0900-1900. Visiting hours for siblings 1600-1900.
