Our Region and Units
The West Midlands Neonatal Network is comprised of 14 Neonatal Units and a Surgical Centre at Birmingham Children's Hospital. The Network exists to support hospitals in the region to provide high-quality care for families in the right place at the right time, as close to home as possible.
Neonatal care is organised across the network into different levels. There are three types of units with different specialities. Each unit works collaboratively to provide care in the right place at the right time.
Level 3 - Neonatal Intensive Care Unit - NICU for complex care
Level 2 - Local Neonatal Unit - LNU for high dependency
Level 1 - Special Care Baby Unit - SCBU for initial and short-term care
